Have you ever just stopped to think about all the things in your life you are grateful for? That’s our challenge to you this Thanksgiving season!
“Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson
Years ago someone came to me and offered the following Thanksgiving challenge. No, it wasn’t an eating contest. No, it wasn’t a football-watching contest. Believe me, those aren’t really challenges. Their challenge was to pray on Thanksgiving Day for at least 15 minutes, and during the prayer I couldn’t ask for anything, but had to give thanks the entire time. First of all, I had never prayed that long in a single prayer in my entire life. In fact, a month’s worth of my prayers probably didn’t add up to 15 minutes, sad to say. In addition to that, most of my prayers likely involved me skipping past the ‘giving thanks’ part to get to what I really needed at the moment.
So I decided to take the challenge. I set a little timer next to me and started to pray. After giving thanks for the obvious things (family, food, and football), I realized that I was in trouble. That only took two minutes, meaning there were 13 more to go. I had to change my strategy and start to get more specific. So I started giving thanks for individual people, everyone I could think of. That helped; it took me to maybe the five minute mark. I had to get even more specific. So I started to give thanks for mundane things like specific pairs of shoes, movies that I liked, individual trees in the yard, all the times I probably almost died but didn’t. After the 15 minutes had passed, I realized something: I had so much to be thankful for that I didn’t even think about, and it seriously helped me have a grateful heart that day.
I’m not sure if it’s the time of year or if it is the fact that I’m about to complete 17 years of working for this amazing company that has me feeling so grateful today. I have been so blessed by this company and the products we sell. I truly have a Noni Family. I met my wife because of Morinda. I have two beautiful children who I can provide for because of Morinda. I want to publicly express my thanks to the Founders for creating this company and giving me a home for the last 17 years. And by doing so, hopefully they’ll keep me around for another 17 more.
“Gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions. The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express gratitude for.” –Zig Ziglar
So my invitation to you this month is to take the Dan Calley 15 minute Thanksgiving Challenge. And by doing so, may the words of Zig Ziglar come true for you too.
